Luke 1:23

And it came to passe, that as soone as the dayes of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his owne house. Luke 1:23 (KJV)

Context: To understand this verse we look back to Luke 1:5‑22, where Zechariah is introduced as a priest serving in the temple. While performing his duties an angel announced that his wife Elizabeth would conceive a son named John. Zechariah doubted the message and was rendered mute until the child’s birth.

Now we focus on Luke 1:23. The verse begins, “as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished,” referring to the period Zechariah fulfilled his priestly duties. According to historical records the priests served in rotating courses established by King David (1 Chronicles 24), and, as the Law of Moses prescribed, each priest served for a designated period before returning home.

The next phrase, “he departed to his own house,” indicates that Zechariah left the temple and went back to his family home, marking the conclusion of his official service.

The significance of this moment lies in its marking the transition from Zechariah’s role as a temple priest to his forthcoming role as the father of John the Baptist, the forerunner of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
