Luke 1:35
“And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”
Luke 1:35 is part of the account of the Annunciation, where the angel Gabriel appears to Mary to announce that she will conceive and give birth to Jesus, the Son of God. This verse contains the angel’s response to Mary’s question about how this miraculous conception would occur.
The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee:The angel Gabriel informs Mary that the Holy Spirit, or the Holy Ghost, will come upon her. This emphasises the divine nature of Jesus’ conception. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity, and this verse highlights the involvement of all three persons of the Godhead in the incarnation of Jesus.
The power of the Highest shall overshadow thee:The angel also mentions that the power of the Highest, referring to God Himself, will overshadow Mary. This signifies the divine intervention and the extraordinary nature of Jesus’ conception. The overshadowing power of God demonstrates His sovereign authority and involvement in this miraculous event.
That holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God:The angel assures Mary that the child conceived in her will be holy and referred to as the Son of God. This emphasises the unique nature of Jesus’ birth, as He is the divine Son of God. The title “Son of God” speaks to His divine identity, signifying that Jesus is God in human form, fully divine and fully human.
This verse highlights the miraculous and divine nature of Jesus’ birth. It demonstrates the work of the Holy Spirit in bringing about the incarnation and affirms Jesus’ identity as the Son of God. Luke 1:35 sets the stage for the unfolding of the story of Jesus’ life, ministry, and ultimately, His sacrificial death and resurrection for the redemption of humanity.
