Luke 1:36

Listen to this article

“And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.”

Context:The Gospel of Luke provides a detailed account of the events leading up to and surrounding the birth of Jesus. In the previous verses, we learn that the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she would conceive and give birth to a son who would be called Jesus and would be the Son of the Most High (Luke 1:31-33). Mary, being a virgin, was initially perplexed but accepted God’s plan for her life.

The announcement of Elizabeth’s pregnancy: In Luke 1:36, Gabriel informs Mary that her relative, Elizabeth, who was considered barren and had been unable to conceive, had conceived a son in her old age. This miraculous pregnancy was a sign of God’s intervention and power. Elizabeth’s pregnancy served as a precursor to the extraordinary birth of Jesus.

The fact that Elizabeth, who was considered barren, became pregnant in her old age demonstrates God’s ability to bring about miraculous and unexpected events. It emphasises God’s power to fulfil His promises and overcome natural limitations. This pregnancy also establishes a connection between Mary and Elizabeth, highlighting the shared experience of divine intervention in their lives.

The mention of Elizabeth’s pregnancy holds significance because it fulfils an Old Testament prophecy. In the book of Malachi, the last book of the Old Testament, it is prophesied that before the arrival of the Messiah, a messenger would come to prepare the way (Malachi 3:1). This messenger is later identified as John the Baptist, who would be born to Elizabeth and her husband Zechariah.

Elizabeth’s conception, despite her old age and barrenness, teaches us about the importance of faith and trust in God’s timing and plan. It reminds us that nothing is impossible for God, and He can bring about extraordinary things in our lives when we surrender to His will and believe in His promises.
