Luke 1:33

And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Context

The angel Gabriel speaks these words to Mary, announcing that she will conceive a son by the Holy Spirit and name Him Jesus. Gabriel declares that Jesus will be great, will be called the Son of the Most High, and will receive the throne of His father David. Luke 1:33 completes that promise by describing the eternal nature of His reign over the house of Jacob.

Meaning

The phrase “the house of Jacob” refers to the descendants of Jacob, also named Israel. It identifies the people of Israel, the chosen nation through whom God established His covenants. Jesus, as the Messiah, reigns over this people, and through faith, both Jew and Gentile are included in His everlasting kingdom.

The verse affirms that Jesus’ reign is eternal. Unlike earthly kings and kingdoms that rise and fall, His kingdom has no end. This truth points to His divinity and emphasizes His absolute authority and sovereignty over all creation.

Luke 1:33 echoes Old Testament prophecies, such as Isaiah 9:6-7 and Daniel 7:13-14, which speak of a Messiah whose government and peace will have no end and whose kingdom will never be destroyed. Jesus is the fulfillment of these promises, the long-awaited King who establishes an everlasting dominion.
