Isaiah 9:6
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
Context:The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. In this particular verse, Isaiah speaks of a future hope and the coming of a special child who will bring transformation and establish a righteous government.
Birth of a Child:“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.” This prophecy points to the birth of a child who will bring significant blessings and fulfill God’s promises. The child mentioned here signifies the Messiah, the Savior, who would come into the world.
The Government on His Shoulder:“And the government shall be upon his shoulder.” This phrase suggests that the child who is born will have ultimate authority and control over the government. It emphasizes the Messiah’s role as a ruler and king.
His Names:Isaiah mentions several names that will be given to the child: “Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” These names describe the attributes and nature of the Messiah.
– Wonderful: This name denotes the extraordinary nature of the child. He will perform wonders and acts beyond human comprehension.
– Counsellor: The child will possess divine wisdom and will guide and counsel people with perfect understanding.
– The mighty God: This name reveals the deity of the Messiah. It emphasizes that He is not merely a human king but also God Himself.
– The everlasting Father: This title portrays the Messiah’s role as the provider, protector, and source of eternal life. He will care for His people as a loving father.
– The Prince of Peace: The child will bring true peace to the world. He will establish peace between God and humanity and promote peace among people.
Fulfillment in Jesus Christ:As Christians, we believe that Isaiah’s prophecy in this verse finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Jesus was born as a child, fulfilling the prophecy of a virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14) and bringing salvation to the world. He has demonstrated the attributes mentioned in Isaiah 9:6 and continues to bring peace to those who trust in Him.
This verse in Isaiah offers a beautiful picture of the promised Messiah who would come to bring hope, establish righteousness, and bring peace to the world. Through Jesus Christ, we see the fulfillment of this prophecy and the manifestation of God’s love and grace for humanity.
