Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:14 (KJV)
Context
Isaiah spoke this prophecy during the reign of King Ahaz of Judah, when the northern kingdom of Israel and Aram (Syria) had formed an alliance against Judah. Ahaz was tempted to seek protection from Assyria, but Isaiah urged him to trust in God instead. In this setting, the Lord Himself offered a sign to reassure the king and the people of His presence and deliverance.
Meaning
The sign is the birth of a child named Immanuel, which means “God with us.” The Hebrew word translated “virgin” is almah, which can mean a young woman of marriageable age or specifically a virgin. The New Testament writers understood this prophecy as pointing to the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ, as Matthew quotes this verse and applies it to Jesus (Matthew 1:22-23). Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary through the Holy Spirit, embodies the meaning of Immanuel by being God incarnate, dwelling among humanity to bring salvation.
Biblical connections
Matthew’s Gospel directly connects this prophecy to Jesus, showing that His birth fulfilled Isaiah’s words. The name Jesus means “Savior,” and His coming as Immanuel reveals that God Himself has drawn near to rescue His people. This connection affirms the unity of Scripture and the faithfulness of God to His promises.
Application
This verse calls believers to trust in God’s promises even in times of fear and uncertainty. Just as God gave a sign to Ahaz, He has given the ultimate sign in Jesus Christ. The presence of God with His people is not a distant hope but a reality through Christ, who came to dwell among us and bring redemption.
Reflection
How does the truth that God is with us change the way we face our own crises? The birth of Jesus assures us that God is not distant but intimately involved in our lives. His presence brings comfort, strength, and hope, reminding us that He is faithful to fulfill every promise.
