Matthew 1:23

Listen to this article

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”

Context:Matthew 1:23 is a part of the Gospel of Matthew, which records the genealogy and birth of Jesus Christ. It is written to a Jewish audience, emphasizing Jesus as the promised Messiah and the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies.

Prophecy fulfilment:This verse highlights the fulfilment of a prophecy from Isaiah 7:14, which states, “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” By quoting this prophecy, Matthew establishes the connection between Jesus’ birth and the promised Messiah foretold in the Old Testament.

The Virgin Birth:Matthew emphasises the miraculous nature of Jesus’ birth by stating that “a virgin shall be with child.” This affirms the virgin birth of Jesus, meaning that Mary conceived Jesus through the Holy Spirit while remaining a virgin. The virgin birth is significant because it demonstrates Jesus’ unique nature as both fully human and fully divine.

The Name Emmanuel:The verse goes on to explain that Jesus will be called Emmanuel, which means “God with us.” This name signifies the profound truth that God Himself has come to dwell among humanity in the person of Jesus Christ. It reflects the central message of the Gospel, highlighting God’s desire to reconcile and restore the relationship between Himself and humanity.

Implications and Application:

  • Jesus’ divinity:By being called Emmanuel, Jesus is identified as God in human form. This emphasises His divine nature, which is foundational to Christian belief.
  • God’s presence and accessibility:The name Emmanuel signifies God’s desire to be present with His people. Through Jesus, God extends His love, mercy, and salvation to all who believe. It demonstrates God’s willingness to be intimately involved in our lives.
  • Trust in God’s promises:The fulfilment of the prophecy of a virgin birth demonstrates the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises. This encourages believers to trust in God’s Word and His ability to bring about what He has declared.
  • The significance of names:In biblical times, names often carried deep meaning and conveyed a person’s character or mission. The name Emmanuel encapsulates Jesus’ identity and purpose, emphasising His role in reconciling humanity to God.

As we reflect on Matthew 1:23, we are reminded of the remarkable event of Jesus’ birth, His divine nature, and God’s desire to be with us. It serves as a foundation for understanding the person and mission of Jesus Christ, inspiring believers to trust in God’s faithfulness and embrace His presence in their lives.
