Matthew 1:24

Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:

Matthew 1:24 (KJV)

Matthew 1:24 is part of the narrative surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ. In this verse, Joseph, who was engaged to Mary, obeys the angel of the Lord and takes Mary as his wife. Prior to this, Joseph had discovered that Mary was pregnant, and being a just man, he decided to divorce her quietly to spare her public disgrace. However, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and reassured him of the divine origin of Mary’s pregnancy, instructing him not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife, for the child conceived in her was from the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20).

Matthew 1:24 emphasizes Joseph’s obedience to the angel’s message. When Joseph woke from sleep, he immediately did as the angel had commanded him. He took Mary as his wife, despite the societal implications and potential misunderstandings that could arise from accepting her with a seemingly illegitimate child. The phrase “took unto him his wife” indicates the formalization of the marriage, protecting Mary’s reputation and fulfilling the angel’s command. The verse does not elaborate on Joseph’s emotions or doubts, focusing instead on his action, which becomes a model of faithful discipleship.

Joseph’s obedience reveals his trust in God’s plan and his willingness to follow divine guidance. He did not rely on his own understanding or societal norms but chose to trust in the message delivered by the angel. His decision to take Mary as his wife demonstrates his acceptance of God’s plan for their lives. He recognized that this miraculous conception was part of God’s redemptive work and willingly played a significant role in it. Joseph’s obedience required him to set aside his personal plans and preferences, teaching the importance of obeying God even when it challenges our own desires or societal expectations.

By accepting Mary as his wife, Joseph acted in line with the prophecy spoken by the prophet Isaiah, which Matthew later cites in Matthew 1:23. This event also connects to the theme of God’s sovereignty, as Joseph’s obedience enables the fulfillment of prophecy regarding the Messiah’s birth. In the broader context of Matthew’s Gospel, this obedience is foundational to the birth narrative, showing that human cooperation is part of God’s redemptive plan.

  • Trust in God’s plan: Like Joseph, we should trust in God’s plan for our lives, even when it does not align with our own understanding or expectations. God’s ways are higher than ours, and He works all things together for good for those who love Him.

  • Obedience to God’s word: Joseph’s obedience serves as a reminder that we should be obedient to God’s word, even when it requires us to make sacrifices or step out of our comfort zones. True obedience is not merely intellectual assent but practical action.

  • Acceptance and forgiveness: Joseph’s willingness to accept Mary despite the challenging circumstances reminds us of the importance of grace, forgiveness, and acceptance in our relationships with others.

Matthew 1:24 is a concise but powerful testimony to the virtue of obedience, demonstrating that God’s plans advance through the faithful actions of His servants. The verse encourages us to consider how we respond to God’s instructions—whether with hesitation or with ready compliance. It also serves as a reminder that God’s commands, though sometimes difficult, are always for our good and His glory. May this encourage you to seek a deeper understanding of God’s plan and the role He has for you in it.
