Listen to this article

“He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David.”

Context:The Gospel of Luke provides a detailed account of the birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Luke 1, we find the story of the angel Gabriel visiting Mary, who was a young virgin engaged to a man named Joseph.

This verse is a part of the account of the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary and announcing to her the miraculous conception of Jesus. Gabriel reveals to Mary that she will give birth to a son who will be called “the Son of the Highest” and will receive the throne of his father David.

“He shall be great”:Gabriel begins by proclaiming that the child to be born will be great. This statement emphasizes the significance and importance of Jesus’ mission and purpose.

“Called the Son of the Highest”:Gabriel declares that Jesus will be called the “Son of the Highest.” This title reveals the divine nature and identity of Jesus. He is not merely a human being but the Son of God, partaking in the divine nature and possessing the highest authority and power.

“The Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David”:This statement points to the fulfillment of the Messianic prophecy found in the Old Testament. The throne of David refers to the kingdom promised to David and his descendants forever (2 Samuel 7:12-13). Jesus, as a descendant of David, will receive this eternal throne, indicating that He is the long-awaited Messiah.

  • Jesus’ greatness:The proclamation of Jesus’ greatness highlights His unique and extraordinary role in salvation history. As Christians, we recognize and honor Jesus as the greatest teacher, healer, savior, and king.
  • Divine Sonship:Jesus being called the “Son of the Highest” affirms His divine nature, emphasizing His identity as the second person of the Trinity. This declaration supports the Christian belief in the deity of Christ.
  • Fulfillment of prophecy:The mention of Jesus receiving the throne of David confirms the fulfillment of the Messianic prophecies found in the Old Testament. This verse reinforces Jesus’ legitimacy as the promised Messiah, tracing His lineage back to David.
  • The establishment of an eternal kingdom:Jesus’ inheritance of the throne of David indicates the establishment of an everlasting kingdom. As believers, we participate in this kingdom through our faith in Christ and recognize Him as our ultimate King.

Overall, Luke 1:32 highlights the greatness, divine sonship, and Messianic identity of Jesus Christ. It assures believers that Jesus fulfills the promises of the Old Testament and establishes an eternal kingdom.
