Luke 1:31

Listen to this article

“And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.”

Context:Luke 1:31 is part of the narrative of the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary and delivering a message from God. In this verse, Gabriel informs Mary of the miraculous conception and birth of Jesus.

The Announcement of the Incarnation:The verse begins with the phrase “And, behold,” which signals the attention and anticipation of the listener. Mary is told that she will conceive in her womb and give birth to a son. This announcement is extraordinary because Mary was a virgin, and this miraculous conception would occur through the power of the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:34-35).

The Significance of Jesus’ Name:The angel declares that Mary shall call her son’s name Jesus. The name “Jesus” is derived from the Hebrew name Yeshua, meaning “Yahweh is salvation.” This name reflects the mission and purpose of Jesus, who came to save humanity from sin and reconcile them to God. The name Jesus is significant because it signifies His identity as the Savior of the world (Matthew 1:21).

The Fulfillment of Prophecy:The birth of Jesus is a fulfillment of various prophecies in the Old Testament. For example, Isaiah 7:14 prophesied that a virgin would conceive and bear a son, and He would be called Immanuel, which means “God with us.” The announcement to Mary is a direct fulfillment of this prophecy, revealing Jesus as the promised Messiah.

The Incarnation:The verse emphasizes the reality of the incarnation, wherein the eternal Son of God took on human flesh and entered the world as a baby. This event is of utmost significance to the Christian faith as it demonstrates God’s love and His desire to dwell among His people.

Mary’s Response:Following this announcement, Mary responds in humility and surrender, expressing her willingness to be a servant of the Lord (Luke 1:38). Her faith and obedience play a vital role in God’s redemptive plan.

  • Luke 1:31 teaches us about the miracle of the incarnation, reminding us of the profound love of God in sending His Son into the world for our salvation.
  • Jesus’ name holds great significance, reminding us of His identity as our Savior and the one who brings salvation and reconciliation with God.
  • Mary’s response to the angel’s message teaches us the importance of faith, humility, and surrender to God’s will in our lives.
