Luke 1:8

Listen to this article

And it came to passe, that while he executed the Priests office before God in the order of his course, Luke 1:8 (KJV)

Luke 1:8 is part of the account of the birth of John the Baptist. The Gospel of Luke provides a detailed narrative of the events surrounding the birth of Jesus and John the Baptist. In this verse, the focus is on Zacharias, who was a priest serving in the temple. Zacharias was married to Elizabeth, and they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord (Luke 1:6). Despite their devotion, Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years. Zacharias was chosen by lot to enter the temple and burn incense before the Lord. As Zacharias was fulfilling his priestly duties by offering incense on the altar, an angel of the Lord appeared to him. But Zacharias, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. The angel appeared on the right side of the altar, signifying a divine encounter. This appearance was unexpected and extraordinary, as angelic visitations were rare and awe‑inspiring. The altar of incense was an essential element of temple worship in the Old Testament. It was situated in the Holy Place before the veil separating the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place (Exodus 30:1‑10). The incense was a symbol of prayer and worship, representing the prayers of the people rising to God (Psalm 141:2, Revelation 5:8). Zacharias’ role in offering incense symbolized his intercessory ministry before God on behalf of the people. The angel’s appearance to Zacharias was a direct intervention from God. This encounter marked a significant turning point in Zacharias’ life and had far‑reaching implications for the entire world. The angel had a message to deliver to Zacharias concerning the birth of his son, John the Baptist, who would prepare the way for the coming of the Messiah. Luke 1:8 sets the stage for the miraculous events that follow, revealing God’s faithfulness in answering prayers and His plan for redemption. It demonstrates that God can intervene in the lives of His people at any moment, even in the midst of their regular service to Him. Luke 1:8 captures the moment when Zacharias was selected to serve in the temple, setting the stage for the divine encounter described in Luke 1:11. This event signifies divine intervention and highlights God’s faithfulness, the significance of faithful service, and the importance of being open to divine encounters in our lives.
