Luke 1:1
Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
Luke 1:1 (KJV)
Context
Luke, a physician and companion of the apostle Paul, wrote this Gospel to give an orderly and accurate account of the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. His preface, extending through Luke 1:4, explains his reasons for writing and sets the stage for the entire book.
Meaning
“Forasmuch as many have taken in hand” acknowledges that others had already attempted to write about Jesus and the early Christian faith. The phrase “taken in hand” suggests an undertaking, not necessarily a completed or fully reliable work. Luke recognizes these earlier efforts but intends to provide his own account based on careful investigation and eyewitness testimony.
“To set forth in order” reveals Luke’s aim to present a systematic and well-organized narrative. His purpose is to give readers a trustworthy account they can follow, distinguishing his work from earlier writings that may have been less structured or comprehensive.
“A declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us” points to the firm convictions of the early Christian community. Luke is not introducing new ideas but affirming and strengthening faith by presenting a reliable narrative of the events and teachings of Jesus. The events he describes—Christ’s birth, life, miracles, death, resurrection, and ascension—were matters of strong evidence and full assurance among believers.
Application
Luke’s example encourages believers to ground their faith in reliable testimony and careful study. Just as Luke investigated and wrote to confirm the truth, Christians today can grow in assurance by examining the Scriptures and the historical witness to Jesus.
Reflection
How firmly do you hold the things “most surely believed among us”? Luke wrote so that you might have confidence in the truth of Christ. Let his orderly account deepen your trust and thankfulness for the reliable foundation of your faith.
