John 8:20

These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.

John 8:20 (KJV)

John 8:20 takes place during the Feast of Tabernacles, a time when Jerusalem was crowded with pilgrims. Jesus had been teaching in the temple, and the preceding verses record His dialogue with the Pharisees about His identity, His relationship with the Father, and the truth that sets people free (John 8:12-19). The verse marks a transition in that conflict, showing that despite the escalating hostility, Jesus continued His public ministry.

The treasury was a section of the temple where people brought offerings and contributions for the temple’s maintenance and religious activities. Jesus spoke these words openly in this public place, teaching in the temple courts. The phrase “these words spake Jesus” points back to the teaching He had just given, even though the exact words are not repeated here. The latter part of the verse explains that no one laid hands on Him because “his hour was not yet come.” This phrase refers to the divinely appointed time for Jesus’ arrest, crucifixion, and glorification. Throughout John’s Gospel, Jesus’ “hour” is a recurring theme (John 2:4; 7:30; 12:23, 27; 13:1; 17:1). His life was not subject to the whims of His enemies; rather, He moved according to the Father’s timing.

The concept of Jesus’ “hour” appears throughout John’s Gospel, emphasizing that His life and death were under divine control. In John 7:30, the same truth is stated: no one could seize Him because His hour had not yet come. Later, in John 12:23, Jesus announces that the hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified. This consistent theme shows that Jesus was fully aware of the events that would unfold and that His ultimate purpose was to fulfill God’s redemptive plan through His sacrificial death on the cross.

The verse demonstrates both Jesus’ boldness in teaching publicly and the divine sovereignty over the events of His life. Despite the growing opposition and the knowledge of His impending arrest, Jesus fearlessly continued to teach and proclaim the truth. His commitment to faithfully carry out His mission even in the face of opposition serves as an example of unwavering dedication to God’s will. For believers, this highlights that God’s purposes cannot be thwarted by human opposition, and that there is a set time for God’s plans to unfold. It encourages trust in God’s timing, even in the face of danger or opposition.

Jesus’ words and actions in this verse invite us to consider our own trust in God’s timing. Just as Jesus moved according to the Father’s plan, we can rest in the assurance that God’s purposes for our lives are secure. Even when circumstances seem threatening or uncertain, we can remember that God’s timing is perfect and His plans cannot be thwarted.
