John 8:29
And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
John 8:29 (KJV)
Context
Jesus spoke these words during a heated dialogue with the Jews who questioned His authority and identity. He had just declared that He is the light of the world and that He does nothing on His own authority but speaks what the Father has taught Him. In this setting, Jesus affirms His divine mission and His unbroken relationship with the Father.
Meaning
Jesus begins by acknowledging that He has been sent by the Father. This points to His divine mission and purpose on earth: to fulfil the Father’s redemptive plan for humanity. He then declares that the Father is with Him and has not left Him alone. This statement reveals the intimate, unbroken communion between the Father and the Son, a central theme in John’s Gospel. Jesus is not acting independently; His obedience is the basis for the Father’s abiding presence.
Jesus also says, “I do always those things that please him.” This highlights His perfect obedience and submission to the Father’s will. His entire life was centred on fulfilling God’s purposes. This is not occasional obedience but continual, constant devotion. It testifies to Jesus’ sinlessness and His unwavering commitment to His mission.
Biblical connections
This verse reflects the doctrine of the union between the Father and the Son, who are one in nature, essence, power, and glory. The Father’s presence with Jesus is gracious, powerful, comforting, assisting, and strengthening, especially as Jesus acts as man and Mediator.
Application
This verse provides valuable insight into the nature of Jesus’ relationship with the Father and His obedience to God’s will. It reminds us of the close bond between Jesus and God, emphasising their unity and purpose. It also serves as an example for believers, demonstrating the importance of aligning our lives with God’s will and seeking to please Him in all that we do.
By reflecting on this verse, we can examine our own lives and strive to emulate Jesus’ example of obedience and devotion to the Father. It challenges us to consider our priorities and ensure that we are continually seeking to please God in our thoughts, words, and actions. Obedience to God leads to His presence and approval, just as it did for Jesus.
Reflection
Jesus’ words assure us that the Father is with those who do what pleases Him. As we walk in obedience, we can experience the Father’s presence and strength. Let us commit to following Jesus’ example, seeking to please the Father in every aspect of our lives.
