John 8:55

Yet ye haue not knowen him, but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shalbe a lyar like vnto you: but I know him, and keepe his saying. John 8:55 (KJV)

Context: To understand this verse better, let’s look at the surrounding passage (John 8:48‑54). In those verses the Jewish leaders accuse Jesus of being possessed by a demon and insult Him. Jesus responds by defending Himself, declaring His authority, and affirming His unity with the Father.

Jesus’ Knowledge of the Father:

In John 8:55 Jesus says, “Yet ye have not known him; but I know him.” He emphasizes that the Jews do not truly know the Father, while He does. As the Son of God, Jesus enjoys a unique, intimate relationship with the Father and claims a depth of knowledge and understanding that the listeners lack.

Jesus’ Authenticity:

He continues, “and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you.” This statement underscores His authenticity. If He were to deny His knowledge of the Father, He would become a liar, just as those opposing Him are. Jesus presents Himself as the embodiment of truth, unable to deny His connection with God.

Keeping God’s Word:

The verse concludes, “but I know him, and keep his saying.” Here Jesus affirms not only His knowledge of the Father but also His obedience to the Father’s commandments. He perfectly fulfills God’s will, living out the teachings of God’s word. His life demonstrates both intimate knowledge of the Father and faithful obedience to His saying.
