John 8:50

Listen to this article

“And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.”

Context:To understand this verse better, let’s consider its context. In John 8, Jesus was engaged in a dialogue with the Jews who opposed Him. He had been teaching in the temple, and His words challenged their beliefs and exposed their hypocrisy.

Selflessness of Jesus:In this verse, Jesus states that He does not seek His own glory. Throughout His ministry, Jesus consistently demonstrated humility and a focus on glorifying God the Father. His purpose was not self-promotion or personal acclaim but to fulfill the will of the Father and bring salvation to humanity.

Seeking and Judgment:Jesus acknowledges that there is One who seeks and judges. Here, He refers to God the Father. Jesus did not need to seek His own glory because it was the Father’s role to seek it for Him. Likewise, Jesus trusted in the Father’s judgment and authority, recognizing that God alone has the final say in matters of justice and righteousness.

Application:This verse teaches us important lessons about humility, selflessness, and the role of God as the ultimate judge. As followers of Christ, we should emulate His example and prioritise God’s glory above our own. We should not seek personal recognition or accolades but strive to fulfil God’s purposes in our lives. Furthermore, we can find comfort and reassurance knowing that God is the righteous judge who sees all things and will bring justice according to His wisdom and timing.

  • Reflection:Take a moment to reflect on your own motivations and desires. Are you seeking personal glory or recognition, or are you focused on glorifying God? Are there areas in your life where you need to surrender your own ambitions and align them with God’s will? How does the assurance of God as the ultimate judge impact your perspective on justice and righteousness?

Remember, studying the Bible involves a continual process of meditation, reflection, and personal application. It’s always helpful to read the surrounding verses and explore different translations or commentaries to gain a deeper understanding of the passage.
