John 9:11

He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.

John 9:11 (KJV)

Jesus heals a man born blind on the Sabbath, and the neighbors ask how he received his sight. The man answers with a plain, factual account of what Jesus did and what he himself did in response.

The man’s testimony is simple and accurate. He calls Jesus “a man that is called Jesus,” showing that his understanding is still incomplete; he does not yet confess Jesus as Messiah or Son of God. Even so, his honest report is reliable and becomes the foundation for his growing faith throughout the chapter.

The healing required obedience. Jesus made clay, anointed the man’s eyes, and told him to wash in the pool of Siloam. The man did not receive sight at the moment the clay was applied, but only after he obeyed the command to wash. This shows that divine power often works through humble, specific acts of obedience.

Siloam means “Sent,” pointing to Jesus as the One sent from the Father and the Light of the world. The physical washing brought physical sight, and it also began a deeper spiritual awakening. The man’s willingness to hear and obey prepared him to recognize Jesus more fully later.

In John 9:3, Jesus explains that the man’s blindness was not caused by sin, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. The healing itself is a sign that reveals Jesus as the Light of the world (John 9:5).

Believers can follow the man’s example by testifying simply and truthfully about what the Lord has done, even when they do not yet understand everything about Him. Obedience to Christ’s instructions, however small or humbling, is often the path through which His restoring work is realized.

The man’s testimony invites each reader to consider whether they are willing to obey Jesus’ word and to speak plainly of His work in their lives, trusting that He who sends also heals.
