John 9:9

Posted on 18 May at 14:37
Listen to this article

“Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.”

Context:John 9 is the account of Jesus healing a man who was born blind. In this verse, people are observing the healed man and expressing different opinions about his identity.

The Miracle of Healing:Prior to this verse, Jesus spat on the ground, made clay with the saliva, anointed the man’s eyes, and told him to go wash in the pool of Siloam. As the man obeyed, he received his sight. This miraculous healing demonstrated Jesus’ divine power and compassion.

Different Opinions:When the people saw the man who was formerly blind, they couldn’t agree on his identity. Some recognised him as the one who used to beg while blind, while others doubted and compared him to someone similar. The healing had brought about confusion and divided opinions among the witnesses.

Confidence in Testimony:Despite the differing opinions, the man who was healed affirmed his identity by saying, “I am he.” His response demonstrated his certainty and confidence. He didn’t waver or doubt, but boldly declared himself as the one who was once blind and now able to see.

Symbolic Meaning:This verse also holds a symbolic significance. The physical healing of the man represents the spiritual healing that Jesus brings. Just as the blind man gained physical sight, Jesus offers spiritual sight and salvation to those who believe in Him. The man’s confident affirmation of his identity reflects the assurance and certainty that believers have in their new identity as children of God.

Application:As we reflect on this verse, we can draw several lessons. Firstly, the diverse opinions of the people remind us that not everyone will acknowledge or understand the work of God in our lives. It is important for us to stay grounded in our faith, regardless of others’ perceptions or doubts. Secondly, the man’s confident declaration encourages us to stand firm in our identity as followers of Christ, without hesitation or compromise. Lastly, the verse prompts us to recognise and appreciate the transformative power of Jesus in our lives, just as the man experienced a profound change from blindness to sight.

  • In conclusion:John 9:9 portrays the differing opinions of the people regarding the healed man’s identity. The man himself boldly affirmed who he was, highlighting the assurance and confidence that believers have in their transformed lives through Christ. This verse invites us to hold fast to our faith, stand firm in our identity as children of God, and recognise the transformative power of Jesus in our lives.
