John 9:31
Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
John 9:31 (KJV)
Context
In John 9, Jesus heals a man who was born blind. He makes clay with His saliva, anoints the man’s eyes, and tells him to wash in the pool of Siloam. The man obeys and receives his sight. This verse is part of the man’s testimony before the Pharisees, who question the legitimacy of the healing. The man, once a beggar, now teaches the religious leaders about God’s ways.
Meaning
The man’s statement reflects a common understanding in his day: God does not listen to those who live in unrepentant sin. The verse contrasts “sinners” with “a worshipper of God” who “doeth his will.” The Greek word for “sinners” (ἁμαρτωλῶν) and “heareth” (ἀκούει) indicate a general principle: God is attentive to the prayers of those who genuinely worship Him and obey His will.
The phrase “a worshipper of God” implies deep devotion and reverence, not mere outward ritual. The term suggests a life committed to honoring God. The added phrase “and doeth his will” emphasizes that true worship is accompanied by active obedience. God hears those who not only claim to follow Him but also strive to align their lives with His purposes.
Biblical connections
This verse echoes the broader biblical teaching that God draws near to the obedient and humble. The man’s testimony is remarkable because he, a healed beggar, teaches the Pharisees about God’s ways. His statement is not a comprehensive doctrine of prayer but a faithful observation about the relationship between obedience and answered prayer. It does not teach that all prayers of believers are answered as they wish, but that God responds to those who are His worshippers.
Application
Cultivate a heart of worship: Develop a genuine desire to worship and reverence God in all areas of life. Let worship extend beyond formal religious practices and permeate thoughts, attitudes, and actions.
Seek to know and do God’s will: Dedicate time to study and understand God’s Word, and endeavor to apply His principles in daily life. Strive to align decisions and actions with His will, seeking His guidance through prayer.
Repentance and humility: Recognize the presence of sin in your life and approach God with a humble heart. Confess sins, seek forgiveness, and make a conscious effort to turn away from sinful behaviors.
Trust in God’s faithfulness: Remember that God is attentive to the prayers of those who earnestly seek Him. Trust in His faithfulness and rely on His guidance and provision in all circumstances.
Reflection
This verse encourages believers that God hears their prayers when they live in obedience. It also serves as a warning that unrepentant sinners cannot expect God’s favor. The man’s faith and courage in defending Jesus, even before the religious leaders, is a model of boldness. His testimony leads to his excommunication and later encounter with Jesus, where he worships Him. This chapter reveals Jesus as the Light of the world and the Son of God, and the man’s words point to the truth that God honors those who honor Him.
