John 9:30

The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.

Context

John 9 recounts the healing of a man born blind. After Jesus made clay, anointed the man’s eyes, and sent him to wash in the pool of Siloam, the man received his sight. The religious leaders interrogated him and his parents, seeking to discredit Jesus. In this verse, the healed man responds to their questioning with astonishment at their ignorance.

Meaning

The man calls their position a “marvellous thing“—something strange and unaccountable. The religious leaders had just claimed to know that God spoke to Moses, yet they could not discern the origin of the one who performed such an unprecedented miracle. The man’s logic is simple and direct: the miracle of opening the eyes of one born blind is so great that it should have compelled them to recognize Jesus as being from God. His argument rests on the undeniable evidence of his own healing, which he had already confessed: “one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see” (John 9:25).

Biblical connections

The man’s reasoning continues in John 9:31, where he states that God does not hear sinners but hears those who worship Him and do His will. This principle supports his conclusion that Jesus must be from God. The healed man’s testimony demonstrates that a transformed life is a powerful witness that can expose the blindness of those who refuse to see the truth.

Application

This verse prompts us to reflect on our own response to Jesus’ marvelous works. Are we aware of the ways Jesus has transformed our lives? Do we recognize Him as the source of our blessings and spiritual insight? Are we open to God’s revelation and willing to let go of our preconceived notions to embrace the truth of Jesus’ teachings? Like the healed man, we are called to testify simply and boldly to what God has done, even when others refuse to see it.

Reflection

The religious leaders’ spiritual blindness prevented them from recognizing Jesus as the Messiah. They were more concerned with their own interpretations of the law than with acknowledging the divine authority displayed before them. In contrast, the healed man received a personal encounter with Jesus and experienced the transformative power of His touch. His faith and understanding were enlightened through that encounter, and he became a living testimony to Jesus’ power and divine authority.
