John 13:32

Listen to this article

“If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.”

Context:Before we examine John 13:32 in detail, let’s understand its context. This verse is part of a larger passage known as the Farewell Discourse, which begins in John 13:31 and continues through to John 17. In this discourse, Jesus is preparing His disciples for His impending departure and instructing them about various important matters.

Glorification of God:The verse begins with the statement, “If God be glorified in him.” This refers to Jesus, who is speaking about the imminent betrayal by Judas Iscariot. Despite the betrayal, Jesus affirms that if God is glorified in Him through the events that will unfold, then God will also glorify Him.

Mutual Glorification:The verse continues, “God shall also glorify him in himself.” This statement reveals a reciprocal relationship between God and Jesus. Just as Jesus brings glory to God through His obedience and sacrificial death, God will also glorify Jesus. This mutual glorification highlights the unity and divine purpose between the Father and the Son.

Immediate Glorification:The verse concludes, “and shall straightway glorify him.” Jesus emphasizes that this glorification will happen immediately or without delay. It could refer to Jesus’ resurrection, ascension, or even His glorification at the right hand of the Father.

Significance and Application:John 13:32 reminds us of the interconnectedness between Jesus and God the Father. It emphasizes the divine plan and purpose that Jesus, as the Son of God, fulfills through His obedience and sacrificial death. It also reassures believers that Jesus, despite facing betrayal and suffering, will ultimately be glorified.

  • We should strive to bring glory to God through our thoughts, words, and actions, just as Jesus did.
  • Even in times of betrayal or suffering, we can trust that God has a plan and will ultimately bring about His glorification.
  • The immediate glorification of Jesus reminds us of the assurance of God’s faithfulness and the hope we have in Christ.

Overall, John 13:32 encourages us to trust in God’s sovereign plan, to live for His glory, and to find hope in the glorification that awaits those who follow Jesus faithfully.
