John 13:35

Listen to this article

“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

Context:John 13:35 is part of a larger passage known as the Upper Room Discourse. Jesus is having a final meal with His disciples before His crucifixion. He washes the feet of His disciples as an act of humility and servanthood, setting an example for them. In this context, Jesus emphasizes the importance of love as the distinguishing characteristic of His followers.

Identification:In the verse, Jesus mentions “my disciples.” By this, He is referring to those who have chosen to follow Him, to believe in Him, and to abide in His teachings. Jesus is the master, and His followers are His disciples.

The Measure of Discipleship:Jesus states that “all men” will know that someone is His disciple by the way they love one another. Love becomes the defining mark of a true follower of Jesus. It is not by their knowledge, their achievements, or their religiosity but by their love for one another that they are recognized as disciples.

The Nature of Love:The love Jesus speaks of is not a sentimental or superficial love but a selfless, sacrificial love. It is a love that is modeled after Jesus Himself, who showed His love for humanity by laying down His life on the cross. This love extends beyond feelings and emotions and manifests in actions and attitudes of genuine care, compassion, forgiveness, and service towards others.

The Witness:Jesus’ statement implies that the love demonstrated among His disciples will be a powerful testimony to the world. When believers truly love one another, it becomes a clear signpost to the reality of their relationship with Jesus. Such love draws attention, breaks down barriers, and attracts others to the gospel message.

Unity and Community:This verse highlights the importance of unity and community within the body of Christ. As disciples love one another, they create a fellowship that is marked by harmony, support, and mutual care. This unity not only strengthens the bonds among believers but also serves as a witness to the watching world.

A Command and a Challenge:Jesus’ words in this verse serve as both a command and a challenge to His disciples. They are called to actively demonstrate love towards one another, knowing that their love will bear witness to the world. It is a call to be intentional in fostering an environment of love within the community of believers.

In conclusion, John 13:35 emphasizes that the love demonstrated by Jesus’ followers is the distinguishing mark of their discipleship. This love goes beyond mere words and sentiments and is evidenced through selfless actions and genuine care for one another. When believers love one another, it becomes a powerful witness to the world, drawing others to Christ and exemplifying the transformative power of the gospel.
