John 15:17

Listen to this article

“These things I command you, that ye love one another.”

Context:John 15:17 is part of Jesus’ teachings to His disciples in the upper room, known as the Farewell Discourse. In this discourse, Jesus imparts important instructions and encouragement to His followers before His impending crucifixion.

Love as a Commandment:The verse begins with Jesus saying, “These things I command you.” It is significant that Jesus frames love as a commandment rather than a suggestion. Jesus emphasizes the importance of love, highlighting it as an essential characteristic of His followers. Love is not merely an option but an obligation for all believers.

The Commandment to Love One Another:The specific command in this verse is to “love one another.” Jesus repeatedly emphasized the importance of love throughout His teachings. In John 13:34-35, Jesus says, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples if ye have love one to another.” This commandment sets a high standard for Christians, as they are called to love one another in the same selfless and sacrificial manner in which Jesus loved them.

The Implication of Love:When Jesus commands His disciples to love one another, He provides a powerful witness to the world. Genuine love among believers is meant to be an identifying characteristic of the followers of Christ. When Christians love one another deeply and unconditionally, it becomes a testimony of the transformative power of Christ’s love in their lives.

The Broader Context:To understand the significance of John 15:17 fully, it is essential to consider its place within the broader passage. In John 15:1-17, Jesus uses the analogy of the vine and branches to illustrate the importance of abiding in Him. He emphasizes the necessity of staying connected to Him, the true vine, in order to bear fruit and experience spiritual growth. In this context, loving one another is one of the fruits of abiding in Christ.

Application:

  • John 15:17:challenges believers to examine their lives and relationships. It encourages them to cultivate a deep and sincere love for their fellow believers, displaying Christ’s love in their interactions. This love should extend beyond mere words to practical actions of kindness, forgiveness, and selflessness. By loving one another, believers not only fulfill Christ’s commandment but also contribute to the unity and witness of the Church.

In conclusion, John 15:17 serves as a reminder of the commandment Jesus gave to His disciples to love one another. It highlights the significance of love as an identifying characteristic of His followers and encourages believers to demonstrate Christ-like love in their relationships.
