“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on

Verse: “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.”

Context:John 14 is part of the discourse between Jesus and His disciples on the night before His crucifixion. In this chapter, Jesus comforts His disciples, assuring them of His impending departure and promising the coming of the Holy Spirit.

The Promise of Another Comforter:Jesus tells His disciples that He will pray to the Father, and the Father will send them another Comforter. The word “Comforter” is translated from the Greek word “Parakletos,” which can also mean “Helper,” “Counselor,” or “Advocate.” Jesus Himself had been a Comforter to His disciples during His earthly ministry, but now He promises to send another Comforter who will be with them forever.

The Role of the Holy Spirit:The Comforter that Jesus promises is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity and is sent by the Father to indwell believers after Jesus’ ascension. The Holy Spirit serves as a guide, helper, and counselor to believers, empowering them to live a life pleasing to God and enabling them to bear witness about Jesus (John 15:26). The Holy Spirit’s presence and work in the lives of believers are essential for their spiritual growth, understanding of truth, and empowerment for ministry.

The Permanence of the Holy Spirit:Jesus assures His disciples that the Comforter will abide with them forever. Unlike Jesus’ physical presence, which was limited to His time on earth, the Holy Spirit’s presence is continuous and enduring. The Holy Spirit is not temporary but permanently resides in believers, providing comfort, guidance, and spiritual enablement for their entire lives.

The Prayer of Jesus:Jesus says, “I will pray the Father.” This indicates that Jesus Himself will intercede on behalf of His disciples to the Father, requesting the sending of the Holy Spirit. It highlights Jesus’ role as the mediator between God and humanity, as He intercedes for His followers even after His departure.

Application for Believers:The promise of the Holy Spirit is not limited to Jesus’ disciples at that time but extends to all believers throughout history. As followers of Christ, we have the privilege of having the Holy Spirit indwelling us, guiding us, and empowering us. The Holy Spirit comforts us in times of trouble, convicts us of sin, teaches us God’s truth, and empowers us to live for God’s glory. We can rely on the Holy Spirit’s presence and power in our lives as we seek to fulfill God’s purposes.

In conclusion, John 14:16 assures us of the promise of the Holy Spirit, who is another Comforter sent by the Father. The Holy Spirit’s presence is permanent, and He plays a vital role in the lives of believers, guiding, empowering, and comforting them. As believers, we can rely on the Holy Spirit’s presence and power to live a life that honours God.
