John 14:17
“Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
This verse is part of Jesus’ discourse with His disciples during the Last Supper, where He comforted and prepared them for His impending departure. In this particular verse, Jesus speaks about the coming of the Holy Spirit, whom He refers to as the “Spirit of truth.”
The Spirit of truth:Jesus describes the Holy Spirit as the “Spirit of truth.” This title emphasizes the Holy Spirit’s role in revealing and guiding believers into truth. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, co-equal with God the Father and God the Son (Jesus Christ).
The world cannot receive Him:Jesus points out that the world (referring to those who do not have a personal relationship with God) cannot receive or understand the Holy Spirit. The world’s inability to receive the Spirit is because it does not see or know Him. The Holy Spirit’s work is spiritual and discerned by faith, which worldly-minded people may struggle to grasp.
The disciples’ knowledge of the Spirit:Jesus assures His disciples that they know the Spirit because He dwells with them. During His ministry, Jesus had been with His disciples physically, teaching and guiding them. However, He promises that the Holy Spirit will not only be with them but will also be in them. This indicates the future indwelling of the Holy Spirit within believers, which was later fulfilled on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2).
This verse highlights the distinctive relationship that believers have with the Holy Spirit. Through the Holy Spirit’s presence, believers receive guidance, understanding, and revelation of God’s truth. The world, on the other hand, remains unaware of the Spirit’s workings due to its spiritual blindness and rejection of God.
Overall, John 14:17 emphasises the vital role of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers, guiding them into truth and empowering them for a life of faith and obedience.
