John 14:18

Listen to this article

“I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”

Context:John 14 is part of Jesus’ farewell discourse to His disciples, which took place in the upper room during the Last Supper. Jesus was preparing His disciples for His impending departure, as He knew that He would soon be crucified. In this chapter, Jesus offers comfort and reassurance to His disciples, promising them the presence of the Holy Spirit and His own return.

In this verse, Jesus assures His disciples that He will not leave them “comfortless” or “orphans.” The word “comfortless” can also be translated as “desolate” or “bereaved.” Jesus acknowledges that His physical departure from this world might leave His disciples feeling alone, abandoned, or without guidance. However, He assures them that He will not leave them in such a state. Instead, He promises to come to them.

The Promise Fulfilled:This promise of Jesus was fulfilled through the sending of the Holy Spirit. After Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension, the Holy Spirit was sent to dwell in the hearts of believers, providing comfort, guidance, and empowerment. Through the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence, Jesus continues to be with His followers even after His physical departure.

The Presence of Jesus:While Jesus physically left the earth, His promise to come to His disciples is fulfilled through His spiritual presence. He is present with believers through the Holy Spirit, who dwells within them. This means that Jesus is not distant or removed from His followers but is intimately involved in their lives. Believers can experience a personal relationship with Jesus, knowing that He is present with them at all times.

Application to Believers:For believers, this verse offers great comfort and reassurance. It reminds us that Jesus is with us, even in the midst of challenging circumstances or feelings of loneliness. The presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives testifies to the faithfulness of Jesus’ promise. We can find solace and strength in knowing that we are not left alone but have the abiding presence of Jesus through the Holy Spirit.

Dependence on Jesus’ Presence:Recognizing Jesus’ presence in our lives should lead us to rely on Him for guidance, wisdom, and strength. As we face difficulties or uncertainties, we can turn to Jesus, knowing that He is near and desires to help us. This verse encourages us to cultivate a deep and personal relationship with Jesus, relying on Him as our constant companion and source of comfort.

John 14:18 reassures us of Jesus’ unfailing presence in our lives. He promised to come to His disciples, and that promise is fulfilled through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. As believers, we can find comfort, guidance, and strength in knowing that Jesus is with us. This verse invites us to rely on His presence and cultivate a deep relationship with Him, allowing His Spirit to lead and guide us in every aspect of our lives.
