John 15:26

But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

John 15:26 (KJV)

John 15:26 is part of Jesus’ farewell discourse to His disciples during the Last Supper. Jesus is preparing His disciples for His departure, and He speaks about the role of the Holy Spirit who will come after Him. This promise comes in the midst of Jesus’ teaching about the world’s hatred and the disciples’ need for strength and witness.

Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as the “Comforter.” This term comes from the Greek word “Parakletos,” which means advocate, counselor, or helper. The Spirit is a divine advocate for Christ and for believers, assisting and pleading their cause. Jesus promises to send the Comforter to His disciples, indicating that the Holy Spirit will fulfill a significant role in their lives.

Jesus affirms that He will send the Comforter to His disciples from the Father. This highlights the divine origin of the Holy Spirit and indicates that the Spirit’s coming is part of God’s plan and purpose. The Spirit’s procession from the Father and His being sent by Jesus underscore the unity and cooperation within the Godhead.

Jesus describes the Holy Spirit as the “Spirit of truth.” This emphasizes the Spirit’s role in guiding believers into all truth. The Holy Spirit reveals and imparts divine truth, leading believers into a deeper understanding of God’s Word and His will. As the source of truth, the Spirit directs attention to Christ, not to Himself.

The primary purpose of the Holy Spirit, as stated in this verse, is to testify of Jesus. The Spirit will bear witness to the truth about Jesus Christ, pointing people to Him as the Son of God, Savior, and Lord. This testimony is not merely informative but serves to glorify Christ and confirm His identity and work. The Holy Spirit’s testimony illuminates Jesus’ person, work, and teachings, and empowers believers in their own witness.

Key truths from John 15:26:

  • The Holy Spirit is sent by Jesus from the Father.

  • The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth, guiding believers into all truth.

  • The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father, demonstrating His eternal relationship with God.

  • The Holy Spirit’s central mission is to testify of Jesus Christ.

We should rely on the Holy Spirit to lead, guide, and empower us in our Christian walk. The Spirit of truth equips us with wisdom, discernment, and understanding as we navigate life and share the truth of Jesus with others. The Spirit provides comfort, truth, and empowerment for witness, and the assurance that Christ’s work is testified to by the Spirit.

Since the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth, we should earnestly pursue a deeper understanding of God’s Word and allow the Spirit to reveal its truths to us. We should be open to the Holy Spirit’s guidance and correction as we align our lives with God’s will.

Just as the Holy Spirit testifies of Jesus, we are called to bear witness to Christ in our lives. Through our words, actions, and attitudes, we should reflect His character and proclaim the good news of salvation, pointing others to Jesus. The Spirit’s coming was fulfilled at Pentecost, and His ongoing work is to continue Christ’s work on earth, empowering and guiding believers in their testimony.

Jesus’ promise of the Comforter assures us that we are never left alone. The Spirit of truth dwells within believers, continually bearing witness to the reality of Christ. As we depend on Him, we are drawn into deeper fellowship with the Father and the Son, and our lives become a testimony to the grace and truth found in Jesus.
