John 15:27

Listen to this article

“And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.”

Context:Before examining John 15:27 specifically, it’s important to understand the broader context of this verse. John 15 is part of Jesus’ final discourse with His disciples, commonly known as the Farewell Discourse, which takes place in the upper room just before His arrest and crucifixion. In this discourse, Jesus imparts important teachings to His disciples and prepares them for His departure.

Bearing Witness:In John 15:27, Jesus tells His disciples that they will bear witness. The phrase “bear witness” refers to testifying or giving evidence about something. Here, Jesus is referring to the disciples’ role in proclaiming the truth about Him and His teachings to others. They would be witnesses to the world, sharing what they had experienced firsthand with Jesus during His ministry.

The Disciples’ Qualification:Jesus states that the disciples would be able to bear witness because they had been with Him from the beginning. This implies that their personal relationship with Jesus and their experiences with Him would provide them with the necessary knowledge and authority to testify about Him accurately. The disciples had spent a significant amount of time with Jesus, witnessing His miracles, hearing His teachings, and observing His character.

Application:

  • The principle of bearing witness is not limited to the disciples of Jesus at that time. As believers today, we are also called to bear witness to the truth of Jesus Christ and share the Gospel with others. We may not have physically been with Jesus during His earthly ministry, but we have the privilege of knowing Him through the Scriptures, the work of the Holy Spirit, and our personal relationship with Him.

Like the disciples, our experiences with Jesus, transformed lives, and the power of the Holy Spirit within us enable us to testify to the truth of who He is and what He has done in our lives. Our witness can take various forms, including sharing our testimonies, living out Christ’s teachings in our daily lives, and actively participating in spreading the Good News to others.

Encouragement:John 15:27 serves as an encouragement to believers that, just as the disciples were equipped to bear witness because of their relationship with Jesus, we too can fulfill the call to be witnesses for Christ in the world. It reminds us of the importance of living in close fellowship with Jesus, seeking His guidance, and relying on the power of the Holy Spirit to effectively share His message with others.

In conclusion, John 15:27 highlights the disciples’ role as witnesses for Jesus and emphasizes the importance of their personal experiences with Him. As believers, we are also called to bear witness to the truth of Jesus Christ and share the Gospel with others, relying on our relationship with Him and the empowering of the Holy Spirit.
