John 17:11
And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
John 17:11 (KJV)
Context
This verse is part of Jesus’ prayer to the Father, often called the High Priestly Prayer, recorded in John 17. Jesus spoke these words just before His crucifixion, interceding for His disciples and asking for their protection, unity, and sanctification.
Jesus begins by acknowledging His imminent departure: “And now I am no more in the world.” This refers to His completing His earthly ministry and preparing to return to the Father. It does not contradict His post-resurrection appearances or His future return; rather, it expresses the immediate transition before Him.
In contrast, His disciples remain in the world. Jesus recognizes that they will face challenges, trials, and temptations as they continue the mission He had given them.
Meaning
Jesus addresses the Father as “Holy Father,” a title that emphasizes both God’s holiness and His intimate relationship with His Son. The request to “keep through thine own name” means that the Father’s power and authority—revealed in His name, which represents His attributes, character, and reputation—will guard and preserve the disciples.
The purpose of this protection is “that they may be one, as we are.” This unity is not merely external or organizational but primarily relational and spiritual. It reflects the unity between the Father and the Son—a unity of love, purpose, and shared nature. Believers are called to experience a deep, profound oneness with one another, characterized by love, harmony, and a shared purpose.
Jesus’ prayer for protection emphasizes the reality of spiritual warfare and the need for divine intervention. It also highlights the importance of unity among believers, promoting cooperation, support, and love within the body of Christ. The intimate relationship between Jesus and the Father serves as the model for this unity.
Application
Trust in God’s protection: Just as Jesus trusted the Father to keep His disciples, we can trust in God’s faithfulness to guard and preserve us in the midst of challenges and trials.
Pursue unity: Strive to maintain unity and harmony within the Christian community. Seek to build strong relationships characterized by love, forgiveness, and mutual support.
Reflect the relationship of Jesus and the Father: As believers, we are called to imitate the relationship of Jesus and the Father, demonstrating love, humility, and submission to God and to one another.
Reflection
Jesus’ prayer reminds us that our unity as believers is a testimony to the world. As we remain in the world, we are kept by the Father’s name and empowered to live in oneness with one another, mirroring the divine relationship between the Father and the Son.
