John 19:35

Posted on 18 May at 14:35

“And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.”

John 19:35 is a verse found in the Gospel of John, which focuses on the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This particular verse is part of the account of Jesus’ crucifixion. It comes after the description of Jesus’ side being pierced by a soldier and the flowing of blood and water.

Here are some key points to consider when studying this verse:

  • Testimony and Witness:The verse begins with the phrase “And he that saw it bare record.” The “he” referred to here is likely John, the author of the Gospel. John is emphasising that he personally witnessed and testified to the events that took place during Jesus’ crucifixion. He is presenting himself as a reliable and trustworthy witness.
  • Truth and Belief:The verse continues by stating, “and his record is true.” John affirms the truthfulness of his testimony. He wants his readers to recognise that the events he is describing are not fabricated or exaggerated. He desires to establish the credibility of his witness account.
  • The Purpose of the Record:The verse states, “and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.” John’s intention in sharing his eyewitness testimony is to inspire belief in his readers. He wants his audience to accept and have faith in the reality of Jesus’ crucifixion and its significance for salvation.
  • Faith and Conviction:John’s mention of belief highlights the importance of faith in the Christian life. Throughout the Gospel of John, belief is presented as a fundamental aspect of receiving eternal life (John 20:31). John’s testimony is meant to strengthen the faith of his readers and help them place their trust in Jesus as the Son of God.

When studying this verse, it is essential to place it within the broader context of the crucifixion account in John’s Gospel. It serves as a reminder that the events described are based on the testimony of an eyewitness, and the purpose of this testimony is to lead people to believe in Jesus Christ.

As you continue your Bible study, it is beneficial to explore related verses, consult commentaries, and consider the teachings of other parts of the Bible to deepen your understanding of the significance of Jesus’ crucifixion and the role of faith in the Christian life.
