John 19:36

Posted on 18 May at 14:00

For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. John 19:36 (KJV)

Context: John 19:36 is part of the narrative describing the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It refers to the moment when soldiers came to break the legs of those crucified alongside Jesus to hasten death, but when they came to Jesus they found Him already dead and did not break His legs. This event fulfilled the prophecy mentioned in the verse.

Fulfillment of Scripture: John emphasizes that this incident occurred to fulfill specific Old Testament prophecy. The prophecy is found in Exodus 12:46 and Psalm 34:20, which describe the Passover lamb and state that none of its bones shall be broken. By not breaking Jesus’ bones, this prophecy is fulfilled, establishing Him as the perfect sacrificial Lamb of God.

Symbolism and Spiritual Significance: The unbroken bones point to the perfection and completeness of His sacrifice. In Jewish tradition the Passover lamb had to be spotless and without blemish, symbolizing Jesus’ sinless nature. By preserving His bones, the sacrifice remains intact and flawless, illustrating the perfect fulfillment of God’s plan for salvation.

Comparison to Old Testament Sacrifices: The Old Testament sacrificial system required unblemished animals, whose blood was shed for the remission of sins. Jesus, as the ultimate sacrifice, fulfilled and surpassed these animal sacrifices. His unbroken bones reflect the completeness of His atonement, sufficient to cleanse all who believe.

Christological Interpretation: Psalm 22:14‑17 contains a Messianic prophecy describing the Messiah’s sufferings, including the piercing of hands and feet and the reference to bones being out of joint. The fulfillment of the unbroken‑bones prophecy in John 19:36 connects the crucifixion with these messianic expectations, confirming Jesus’ identity as the promised Messiah.

Faith and Trust: John 19:36 reminds believers of God’s sovereignty and faithfulness in fulfilling His Word. It reinforces the trustworthiness of Scripture and points to divine orchestration behind the crucifixion and resurrection. As believers we can have confidence in God’s promises, knowing He is faithful to accomplish what He has declared.

Conclusion: John 19:36 highlights the fulfillment of Scripture in Jesus’ crucifixion by emphasizing that none of His bones were broken. This underscores the completeness, perfection, and prophetic significance of His sacrificial death, linking Him to Old Testament types and affirming His messianic identity, while encouraging believers to trust in the reliability of God’s Word and the faithfulness of His promises.
