John 21:14

Posted on 18 May at 14:00

This is nowe the third time that Iesus shewed himselfe to his disciples, after that hee was risen from the dead. John 21:14 (KJV)

After Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, He appeared to His disciples on several occasions to strengthen their faith and commission them for their future ministry. In John 21 the disciples, including Peter, went out to fish. They worked through the night and caught nothing. In the morning Jesus stood on the shore, and at first the disciples did not recognize Him.

Jesus’ first words were, “Come and eat breakfast,” or “Come and dine.” This invitation carries deep symbolism. It reflects His desire to fellowship and commune with His disciples. Sharing a meal together often signifies intimacy, friendship, and restoration of relationships. By extending this invitation, Jesus shows His love and care, wanting to spend quality time with those He has sent.

The passage records that the disciples came to know it was the Lord after the miracle. The disciple whom Jesus loved declared, “It is the Lord.” Their recognition reveals the reverence they had for Jesus and confirms that they identified Him as their risen Savior, aided by the miraculous catch of fish.

The disciples’ acknowledgment of Jesus as the Lord affirms their faith in His resurrection. This encounter solidifies their belief that He had conquered death and truly risen from the grave. Their faith is strengthened as they witness His presence and experience the reality of the resurrection firsthand.

Obedience and trust are evident in their response to Jesus’ instruction to cast the nets again. Despite their exhaustion from a long night of fruitless fishing, they followed His direction, and the act of obedience led to an abundant catch. This serves as a reminder of the power and authority of Jesus.

Lessons to learn:

  • a. Intimacy with Jesus – The invitation to eat together signifies His desire for intimate fellowship. We can cultivate intimacy through prayer, studying His Word, and participating in the sacraments.
  • b. Recognizing Jesus – The disciples recognized Him because of their relationship with Him. A deep knowledge of Scripture and a vibrant prayer life help us discern His presence and guidance.
  • c. Obedience and Trust – Their obedience led to a miraculous catch. Likewise, trusting and obeying Jesus can lead to extraordinary outcomes, even when circumstances seem unfavorable.

In summary, John 21:14 portrays the risen Christ inviting His disciples to share a meal, signifying His desire for intimate fellowship. The disciples recognized the Lord’s presence after the miracle and responded with reverence, obedience, and strengthened faith. The passage emphasizes cultivating intimacy with Jesus, recognizing His presence, and demonstrating obedience and trust in Him.
