John 21:14
This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
John 21:14 (KJV)
Context
This verse is a summary statement within the post-resurrection narrative of John’s Gospel. It occurs immediately after Jesus’ third appearance to a group of His disciples, this time by the Sea of Tiberias, also called the Sea of Galilee. In the preceding verses, the disciples had fished all night without success. In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore and directed them to cast the net on the right side of the boat, resulting in a miraculous catch of 153 fish. This sign led the disciples to recognize the Lord. Jesus then invited them to breakfast, and He took bread and fish and gave to them.
Meaning
John 21:14 notes that this was the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after His resurrection. The first appearance was on the day of His resurrection (John 20:19), and the second was eight days later when Thomas was present (John 20:26). This third appearance is at the Sea of Tiberias. The verse emphasizes the reality of the resurrection by recording multiple, verifiable appearances to groups of disciples. It also sets the stage for the following conversation in which Jesus reinstates Peter, asking him three times if he loves Him, corresponding to Peter’s threefold denial.
Biblical connections
The disciples’ acknowledgment of Jesus as the Lord affirms their faith in His resurrection. This encounter solidifies their belief that He had conquered death and truly risen from the grave. Their faith is strengthened as they witness His presence and experience the reality of the resurrection firsthand. The invitation to eat together carries deep symbolism, reflecting Jesus’ desire to fellowship and commune with His disciples. Sharing a meal together often signifies intimacy, friendship, and restoration of relationships. By extending this invitation, Jesus shows His love and care, wanting to spend quality time with those He has sent.
Application
Intimacy with Jesus – The invitation to eat together signifies His desire for intimate fellowship. We can cultivate intimacy through prayer, studying His Word, and participating in the sacraments.
Recognizing Jesus – The disciples recognized Him because of their relationship with Him. A deep knowledge of Scripture and a vibrant prayer life help us discern His presence and guidance.
Obedience and Trust – Their obedience led to a miraculous catch. Likewise, trusting and obeying Jesus can lead to extraordinary outcomes, even when circumstances seem unfavorable.
Reflection
