Acts 1:22

Posted on 18 May at 11:42
Listen to this article

“Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.”

Context:The book of Acts, also known as the Acts of the Apostles, was written by Luke as a continuation of the Gospel of Luke. Acts documents the early history of the Christian church, the ministry of the apostles, and the spread of Christianity.

The Apostles’ Selection Process:After Judas’ betrayal and subsequent death, the remaining eleven apostles, led by Peter, determined that it was necessary to fill the vacant apostolic position. They understood the significance of having twelve apostles to symbolize the twelve tribes of Israel and to continue Jesus’ ministry.

The Qualifications:In Acts 1:21-22, Peter outlined the qualifications for the individual who would be chosen to replace Judas. The candidate must meet the following criteria:

  • a. Witness of Jesus’ Ministry: They needed to have been present from the time of Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist until the moment of His ascension. This ensured that the person was a firsthand witness to Jesus’ earthly ministry.
  • b. Witness of Jesus’ Resurrection: The candidate should have witnessed Jesus’ resurrection, thus providing irrefutable evidence of the resurrection and its significance.

The Purpose:The chosen individual would serve as a witness to Jesus’ resurrection, affirming its reality and testifying to its power. This was a vital aspect of the apostles’ mission as they spread the message of the Gospel and established the early Christian church.

Significance for Today:While the specific criteria mentioned in Acts 1:22 apply to the selection of a replacement apostle, this passage carries broader implications. It highlights the importance of firsthand witnesses to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The apostles’ emphasis on eyewitness testimony emphasizes the reliability and authenticity of the Gospel message.

In conclusion, Acts 1:22 outlines the qualifications set by the apostles for selecting a replacement apostle, emphasizing the need for a firsthand witness of Jesus’ ministry and resurrection. This verse underscores the significance of eyewitness testimony and highlights the apostles’ mission to bear witness to the resurrected Christ.
