Acts 16:16
And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:
Acts 16:16 (KJV)
Context
This incident takes place during Paul’s missionary journey in Philippi, a Roman colony. Paul, Silas, Timothy, and Luke had come to the city to proclaim the gospel. Their habit of going to a place of prayer shows the early believers’ regular devotion, even where such gatherings were not officially sanctioned.
Meaning
The phrase “spirit of divination” translates a Greek term associated with a Python spirit, understood in the ancient world as a demonic power enabling fortune-telling or soothsaying. The girl was not merely clever; she was controlled by an evil spirit that gave her the appearance of supernatural insight. Her condition was exploited by her masters, who profited financially from her abilities. This economic dimension reveals how sin corrupts human relationships and uses people for gain.
Biblical connections
The encounter sets the stage for a direct confrontation between the power of the gospel and the forces of darkness. Paul later commands the spirit to come out in the name of Jesus Christ, demonstrating the authority of Jesus over all spiritual forces. The girl’s soothsaying stood in opposition to God’s commandments, and her deliverance illustrates the gospel’s power to set people free from bondage.
Application
This verse reminds believers that spiritual bondage can be masked by apparent abilities or insights. What seems harmless or even profitable may be incompatible with the message of salvation through faith in Jesus. The passage urges discernment in a world that often values supernatural experiences apart from God, and it warns against the love of money and the exploitation of others for personal gain.
Reflection
The apostles’ commitment to prayer, even in a pagan city, serves as a model for Christian devotion. Their encounter with the possessed girl led to opposition and persecution, reminding us that standing for truth often invites resistance. Yet the gospel’s impact threatens established systems of sin and profit, and God works through faithful witness despite hardship. The deliverance that follows affirms the victory of Christ over the powers of darkness.
