Listen to this article

And this did she many dayes: but Paul being grieued, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the Name of Iesus Christ, to come out of her. And he came out the same houre. Acts 16:18 (KJV)

Context: In this passage we find the Apostle Paul and his companions on their second missionary journey. They had arrived in Philippi, a leading city of Macedonia. As they went to pray by a riverside, they encountered a slave girl possessed by a spirit of divination, who brought her owners great profit by fortune‑telling.

The Spirit of Divination: The girl possessed the ability to predict the future, but the spirit was not from God. It was a demonic presence that controlled her and was used for the profit of her owners.

Paul’s Reaction: Scripture records that Paul was grieved by the situation. He likely felt compassion for the girl who was under the influence of the evil spirit and recognized that the spirit was hindering the work of the Gospel, prompting him to act.

Paul’s Command: Paul turned to the spirit and, in the name of Jesus Christ, commanded it to depart from her. His authority to confront the spirit came from his faith in Jesus, and he exercised the power that the name of Christ provides over demonic forces.

Immediate Deliverance: As soon as Paul gave his command, the spirit of divination left the girl. The deliverance was immediate, demonstrating the effectiveness of Christ’s name.

Implications and Lessons:

  • a. The spiritual realm is real: This encounter highlights the existence of demonic influences and the need for believers to be aware of spiritual battles.
  • b. Authority in the name of Jesus: Believers share the authority that Christ gives to confront and overcome spiritual opposition.
  • c. Compassion for the oppressed: Paul’s response shows a heart of compassion toward those enslaved by evil, urging believers to seek freedom for others.
  • d. The power of the Gospel: The deliverance drew attention to the gospel message, creating further opportunities for its spread.

Overall, Acts 16:18‑19 offers a vivid example of Paul’s confrontation with a spirit of divination, his exercise of authority in the name of Jesus, and the immediate deliverance that followed. It reminds us of the spiritual battles we may face, the authority we possess in Christ, and the compassion we should extend to those in need of deliverance.
