Acts 16:19

Listen to this article

“And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers.”

Context:Acts 16:16-24 tells the story of Paul and Silas encountering a slave girl in Philippi who had a spirit of divination. This girl was able to predict the future and earned a considerable profit for her masters. However, Paul, being grieved in his spirit, commanded the spirit to come out of her in the name of Jesus Christ. As a result, the girl was freed from the spirit, losing her ability to predict the future and bringing an end to the income her masters gained through her.

Lessons from the story:

  • Spiritual discernment:Paul discerned that the girl was not operating in the power of God but had an evil spirit. As believers, we need to be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit and discern between what is from God and what is not.
  • Authority in Jesus’ name:Paul exercised his authority in the name of Jesus Christ to deliver the girl from the evil spirit. This highlights the power and authority that believers have through the name of Jesus. It also emphasises the importance of relying on God’s power rather than relying on worldly means.
  • Opposition to the gospel:The reaction of the girl’s masters demonstrated the opposition that can arise when the message of the gospel threatens personal gain or worldly interests. Paul and Silas faced persecution because their actions impacted the economic interests of those who profited from the girl’s abilities. Similarly, believers today may face opposition when proclaiming the truth of the gospel, but they should remain steadfast in their faith.

Application:

  • Developing spiritual discernment:Like Paul, we should seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to discern between what is of God and what is not. This discernment helps us make wise decisions, avoid deception, and stay aligned with God’s will.
  • Walking in the authority of Jesus’ name:As believers, we have been given the authority to pray, heal, deliver, and proclaim the gospel in the name of Jesus. We should exercise this authority in faith, relying on God’s power and trusting that He will work through us to accomplish His purposes.
  • Expecting opposition:The gospel often challenges the status quo and can bring opposition from various sources. However, we should not be discouraged but remain firm in our faith, knowing that God is with us and will give us the strength to endure and overcome challenges.
  • Prioritising eternal values over temporal gains:The masters of the slave girl were primarily concerned with their financial gains, but Paul and Silas prioritised her spiritual well-being. As believers, we should prioritise the eternal values of God’s kingdom over temporary worldly gains. Our focus should be on glorifying God and advancing His kingdom rather than pursuing selfish ambitions.

Remember, the Bible is rich with wisdom and teachings, and it’s always beneficial to study it in its entirety to gain a comprehensive understanding of God’s message and plan for our lives.
