Acts 17:24

God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

Acts 17:24 (KJV)

Acts 17:24 comes from the Apostle Paul’s address to the Athenians on Mars Hill, also called the Areopagus. Athens was crowded with idols and temples, and Paul had been moved by the city’s devotion to many gods. In this setting, he stood before philosophers and citizens to proclaim the one true God, using even an altar inscribed “TO AN UNKNOWN GOD” as a starting point (Acts 17:23).

The verse opens with a clear declaration: God made the world and everything in it. This affirms that He is the originator of all creation, sovereign over everything that exists. Paul then calls Him “Lord of heaven and earth,” showing that His rule extends over both the spiritual and physical realms. No part of creation lies outside His authority.

Paul’s statement that God “dwelleth not in temples made with hands” directly challenged the common belief that deities lived in human-built shrines. The true God cannot be confined to any structure, because He is the Creator and Lord of all. This truth confronts every attempt to limit God to a place, object, or religious system.

Paul’s words echo the Old Testament witness that God is the Creator of all things (Genesis 1; Isaiah 45:18). They also reflect Stephen’s teaching in Acts 7:48-50, where he quotes Isaiah 66:1-2 to show that the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands. The same truth appears in Acts 17:25, where Paul explains that God is not served by human hands as though He needed anything, because He gives life and breath to all.

This verse calls believers to examine where they place their trust. God is not limited to a building, a ritual, or a human tradition. Genuine worship is not restricted to a particular place but flows from a personal relationship with Him. Jesus taught that true worshippers worship the Father in spirit and truth (John 4:24), and Paul’s words point to the same reality.

Because God is Lord of heaven and earth, He is the ultimate authority in every area of life. Believers are encouraged to submit to His sovereignty, acknowledging that He alone is the ruler and sustainer of all things. This truth also shapes how we share the gospel: Paul began with what his listeners already knew and then redirected them to the true God, showing that the message of Christ can be presented in a way that speaks to each person’s context.

Acts 17:24 reminds us that God is far greater than any human attempt to contain Him. He is the Creator, the Lord of all, and the One who cannot be confined to temples made with hands. This truth invites us to worship Him with reverence and awe, to trust His authority completely, and to share His message with a world that still needs to know the one true God.
