Posted on 18 May at 11:42
Listen to this article

“After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth.”

Context:Acts 18 recounts the missionary journey of the apostle Paul as he traveled from Athens to Corinth. Paul had previously been in Athens, where he preached the Gospel to the philosophers and faced various responses to his message. In this verse, Paul leaves Athens and arrives in the city of Corinth, a significant commercial center in ancient Greece.

Historical Background:– Athens: Athens was a renowned city known for its philosophical and cultural heritage. It was home to great thinkers, and Paul had preached the Gospel there, addressing the Areopagus (Acts 17:16-34).

– Corinth: Corinth, located about 50 miles west of Athens, was a bustling and influential city. It was a wealthy trading center and a hub for commerce and diverse cultures. However, it was also notorious for its immorality and idolatry.

Paul’s Departure:– After his time in Athens, Paul departed and journeyed to Corinth. This move was part of his missionary efforts to spread the Gospel and establish churches in various regions.

– The departure from Athens may have been due to the mixed response he received there. While some believed, others mocked or were skeptical of his teachings.

Significance of Corinth:– Corinth was an important strategic location for Paul’s ministry. As a commercial and cultural center, it offered opportunities to reach people from various backgrounds.

– The city was steeped in idolatry and immorality, presenting a challenging context for Paul to proclaim the Gospel and establish a Christian community.

– Despite the challenges, Corinth was a city where Paul would spend a significant amount of time and establish a thriving church.

Lessons for Us:

  • Willingness to move forward:Paul’s departure from Athens demonstrates his commitment to pressing on with his mission, even in the face of opposition or varying responses. It teaches us the importance of perseverance in sharing the Gospel.
  • Ministering in challenging environments:Corinth was a morally corrupt city, yet Paul was not deterred. His example reminds us of the need to bring the light of Christ to places where it is most needed, regardless of the difficulties we may encounter.
  • Embracing opportunities:Corinth’s diverse population and trade connections offered Paul unique opportunities to reach a wide range of people. It teaches us to be open to God’s leading and to make the most of the opportunities He places before us.

In conclusion, Acts 18:1 marks Paul’s departure from Athens and his arrival in the influential city of Corinth. This verse highlights Paul’s willingness to press on with his mission, his readiness to minister in challenging environments, and his ability to embrace opportunities to share the Gospel.
