Context
Apollos, an eloquent and learned Jew from Alexandria, had spoken boldly in the synagogue at Ephesus, but his understanding was limited, for he knew only the baptism of John. Priscilla and Aquila took him aside and explained the way of God more accurately (Acts 18:24-26). After this correction, Apollos desired to cross into Achaia, and the brethren encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to receive him (Acts 18:27). Acts 18:28 then summarizes his ministry: he “mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.”
Meaning
The word “mightily” indicates the strength and power of Apollos’ reasoning. His arguments were weighty and forceful, and the passages he produced from the Old Testament were so full and pertinent that the Jews could not stand against him. They could not object to the texts he urged, nor to the sense he gave of them, nor answer the arguments founded upon them. He refuted them repeatedly and confounded them. The public nature of his convincing is emphasized; he did this openly, not in private. The method was “shewing by the scriptures”—he used the Old Testament Scriptures to prove that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah. This was the central point of his public argument.
Biblical connections
Apollos’ example shows the importance of being accurately instructed in the faith before engaging in public debate. Priscilla and Aquila’s correction prepared him for effective ministry. His use of the Old Testament to demonstrate that Jesus is the Christ reflects the consistent New Testament pattern of interpreting the Scriptures in light of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection.
