Acts 18:28

Listen to this article

For hee mightily conuinced the Iewes, and that publikely, shewing by the scriptures, that Iesus was Christ. Acts 18:28 (KJV)

The verse records the powerful impact of Apollos, an eloquent and learned Jew from Alexandria, as he preached the Gospel in Achaia. Earlier in Acts (24‑26) we learn that Apollos taught accurately about Jesus in Ephesus, but his understanding was limited. Aquila and Priscilla, seasoned believers, took him aside and explained the way of God more precisely. Strengthened by their correction, Apollos went to Achaia, where his ministry “mightily convinced the Jews” and was carried out publicly, using Scripture to demonstrate that Jesus was the Christ.

Persuasive Teaching – The passage highlights Apollos’ ability to persuade. His eloquence, deep knowledge of the Hebrew Scriptures, and fervent spirit enabled him to win listeners. This reminds believers of the necessity to be well‑versed in God’s Word so that we can present the truth compellingly.

Demonstrating Jesus as the Christ – Apollos showed, through careful exposition of the Old Testament, that the Messiah promised in the prophets was fulfilled in Jesus. The study underscores the importance of interpreting the Old Testament in light of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection.

Public Proclamation – The ministry was conducted openly, reaching a broad audience. Public preaching provides many the chance to hear and respond to the Gospel. Apollos’ example encourages believers to share the good news boldly, without hesitation.

The Role of Scripture – Scripture served as the foundation for Apollos’ arguments. The Old Testament revealed Jesus’ identity and purpose, confirming that a solid grounding in the Bible equips us to teach and persuade effectively.

Application

  • Study the Scriptures diligently – Like Apollos, we must deepen our knowledge of the Bible to communicate its truths accurately.
  • Proclaim Jesus boldly – All believers, not only clergy, are called to speak publicly about the impact of Christ in our lives.
  • Seek correction and growth – Apollos welcomed Aquila and Priscilla’s instruction; we should remain humble and open to learning from more mature Christians.
  • Use Scripture as the basis of all discussion – When engaging others, let the Word of God be the ultimate authority supporting our testimony.

Acts 18:28 thus reminds us of the power of accurate, Scripture‑based teaching, the value of public proclamation, and the central role of the Bible in revealing Jesus as the promised Messiah. May we be inspired to grow in knowledge and courage to share the Gospel with others.
