Acts 26:23
That Christ should suffer, and that hee should be the first that should rise from the dead, & should shew light vnto the people, and to the Gentiles. Acts 26:23 (KJV)
“But first unto them that were at Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and also to the Gentiles, I shewed that they should repent, and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.”
The book of Acts is a historical account of the early Christian church and the spread of the Gospel message. In Acts 26, the apostle Paul is defending himself before King Agrippa and recounting his conversion and calling as an apostle.
Paul mentions that he first proclaimed the message of repentance and turning to God to the people in Damascus (where he encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus), Jerusalem (where he had spent significant time studying under Gamaliel), and throughout all the coasts of Judaea (the region of Israel). Paul’s preaching began among the Jews, primarily focusing on those who were already familiar with the Old Testament Scriptures.
After proclaiming the message among the Jews, Paul also preached to the Gentiles, who were non‑Jewish people not part of the covenant relationship with God under the Old Testament Law. Paul’s ministry was significant because he was called to bring the message of salvation to the Gentiles and open the way for them to receive God’s grace and forgiveness.
The central theme of Paul’s message was the need for repentance and turning to God. Repentance involves acknowledging one’s sins, turning away from them, and turning toward God in faith, a change of heart and mind that leads to a transformation of life. Repentance is essential for anyone who desires to follow God and receive His forgiveness.
Paul emphasizes that true repentance is accompanied by corresponding actions. These “works meet for repentance” are the visible evidence of a changed heart, and genuine repentance results in a transformation that affects how a person lives and interacts with others. It is not merely a verbal declaration but a lifestyle that aligns with God’s principles and reflects His love and righteousness.
In summary, Acts 26:20 showcases Paul’s ministry, starting from Damascus and spreading to Jerusalem, Judaea, and eventually the Gentiles. His message emphasized the need for repentance and turning to God, which should be accompanied by visible actions reflecting a transformed life.
