Acts 27:9
“But when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,”
Context:The book of Acts, written by Luke, provides an account of the early Christian church and the spread of the gospel. In Acts 27, the apostle Paul, accompanied by other prisoners and Roman soldiers, was on a journey by ship to Rome to stand trial before Caesar. The events described in this chapter take place during a perilous voyage.
Time and Danger:The verse begins by mentioning that much time had passed. This indicates that they had been delayed in their journey. The phrase “sailing was now dangerous” suggests that the season for safe travel by ship had passed. The reference to “the fast” likely refers to the Jewish Day of Atonement, which was observed in late September or early October. This implies that the dangerous season for sailing had already arrived.
Paul’s Admonishment:In this verse, we see that Paul took the initiative to address the crew and the people on board. The term “admonished” indicates that he strongly advised or warned them about the dangers ahead. Paul, being a man of faith and having received guidance from God in the past, recognized the potential dangers they would face if they continued the voyage.
- Trusting in God’s Guidance:Throughout the book of Acts, we see how God guided Paul in his missionary journeys. In this particular instance, Paul’s warning was likely influenced by his trust in God’s leading. Although the decision to proceed with the voyage was ultimately made, it highlights the importance of seeking God’s guidance and exercising wisdom in the face of potential dangers.
