Acts 27:7

Listen to this article

“And when we had sailed slowly many days, and scarce were come over against Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete, over against Salmone;”

Context:Acts 27 is a chapter that describes the perilous journey of the Apostle Paul as a prisoner, being transported to Rome. Paul had appealed to Caesar after facing accusations from the Jews, and he was placed on a ship along with other prisoners and a Roman centurion named Julius.

The Slow Journey:The verse begins by stating that they sailed slowly for many days. The journey was not swift, and progress was slow. This detail sets the stage for the challenges they would face later in the chapter. Sometimes in life, we may encounter seasons where progress seems slow, and we are tempted to become discouraged. However, even in these moments, God is still working and has a purpose for the delays.

The Wind Not Suffering:The verse also mentions that the wind did not allow them to proceed towards their desired destination, which was Cnidus. This indicates that they faced adverse weather conditions that hindered their progress. It serves as a reminder that we can encounter obstacles and circumstances beyond our control, which can impede our plans and goals. These situations often test our faith and reliance on God’s guidance and timing.

Sailing Under Crete:Due to the unfavorable wind, they decided to sail under Crete, an island in the Mediterranean Sea. This choice was made in order to find a more sheltered and safer route. Sometimes, when we face obstacles and challenges in life, we may need to adjust our plans and take a different path. It requires wisdom and discernment to navigate such situations, seeking God’s guidance to make the right decisions.

Over Against Salmone:The verse concludes by mentioning that they sailed over against Salmone, which refers to a location on the eastern coast of Crete. This detail helps to provide geographical context to the story. It indicates that, despite the hardships they faced, they were progressing in their journey, even if not according to their initial plans. It is a reminder that, even when things don’t go as we expect, God can still use those circumstances to bring about His purposes.
