Acts 28:4

“And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.”

Context:Acts 28:4 is part of the narrative in the book of Acts that describes the Apostle Paul’s journey as a prisoner to Rome. After surviving a shipwreck on the island of Malta, Paul and the other survivors were welcomed by the natives of the island. As Paul was gathering wood for a fire, a venomous snake bit him on the hand. The response of the people witnessing this incident is recorded in this verse.

Cultural Background:The term “barbarians” in this context refers to the natives of Malta. The word was often used by the Greeks and Romans to describe those who did not speak Greek or Latin. These people were not familiar with Jewish customs or the teachings of Christianity, so they interpreted this event based on their own beliefs and superstitions.

Perception of Misfortune:The reaction of the barbarians reveals their superstitious worldview. They believed that when misfortune struck someone, it was a sign of divine judgment or retribution. Seeing Paul survive the shipwreck only to be bitten by a venomous snake led them to conclude that he must have been a murderer deserving of punishment.

Paul’s Innocence:Although the barbarians quickly assumed Paul was guilty, the text does not provide any evidence of his guilt. In fact, Paul was an innocent man who had been unjustly accused and imprisoned. This incident allowed Paul to demonstrate his faith in God’s protection and showcase God’s power to the people of Malta.

Overcoming Misunderstandings:Despite the initial misunderstanding, Paul’s response to the snakebite and his lack of harm challenged the people’s assumptions. The subsequent healing of the chief official’s father, as recorded in Acts 28:8, further changed the people’s perception of Paul. This event became an opportunity for Paul to share the gospel and witness to the power of God in their midst.

Lessons for Believers:Acts 28:4 reminds us of the importance of not jumping to conclusions or judging others based on appearances. It also encourages believers to trust in God’s protection and providence even in the midst of difficult circumstances. Paul’s example teaches us to respond with faith, grace, and love, even when faced with misunderstandings or false accusations.
