And hee shooke off the beast into the fire, and felt no harme. Acts 28:5 (KJV)

Acts 28 records the events surrounding the apostle Paul’s journey to Rome as a prisoner. After enduring a shipwreck on the island of Malta, Paul and his companions found themselves in the midst of a welcoming local community. While Paul was gathering firewood, a venomous snake bit him, but he miraculously shook it off into the fire and suffered no harm.

Lessons from Acts 28:5:

God’s protection: The incident with the venomous snake demonstrates God’s protection over His servants. Despite the dangerous circumstances, God preserved Paul’s life and shielded him from harm. This event reminds us of God’s faithfulness and His ability to safeguard us even in the midst of perilous situations.

Spiritual resilience: Paul’s reaction to the snake bite is a remarkable example of spiritual resilience and steadfastness. Instead of panicking or giving in to fear, Paul simply shook off the snake and continued with his task. This response shows his unwavering trust in God’s power and providence. It teaches us to remain steadfast and unwavering in our faith, regardless of the challenges or obstacles we encounter.

Overcoming adversity: Paul’s encounter with the snake is a reminder that believers can overcome adversity through the power of God. The snakebite could have been a source of distress and discouragement, but Paul’s faith and God’s intervention turned it into an opportunity for God’s glory to be revealed. It encourages us to face difficulties with confidence, knowing that God can turn our trials into triumphs.

The fulfillment of God’s purposes: Despite the hardship and setbacks Paul faced, God’s sovereign plan to bring the Gospel to Rome remained intact. This event in Malta did not derail God’s purpose for Paul’s life. It emphasises that God’s plans cannot be thwarted by external circumstances or even the schemes of the enemy. God’s purposes will prevail, and He will use every situation for His glory.

Miraculous signs: Acts 28:5 serves as a reminder that miracles and supernatural signs are not limited to the early Church era. God still intervenes in extraordinary ways today. While not every believer may experience such dramatic encounters, this account reassures us that God is still capable of working miracles in our lives.
