Romans 1:5
“By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name”
Context:The book of Romans is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to the believers in Rome. In this letter, Paul addresses various theological concepts and practical instructions for living out the Christian faith.
Receiving Grace and Apostleship:In this verse, Paul acknowledges that he and his fellow believers have received both grace and apostleship. Grace refers to the unmerited favour and loving-kindness of God bestowed upon humanity through the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Apostleship refers to the specific calling and authority given to Paul and others to proclaim the Gospel and establish churches.
Obedience to the Faith:Paul states that the purpose of receiving grace and apostleship is for obedience to the faith. Obedience here implies a response of trust and submission to the message of the Gospel. Faith in this context refers to the whole body of Christian truth and doctrine. Obedience to the faith includes living in accordance with the teachings of Christ and His apostles.
Among All Nations:Paul emphasizes that the obedience to the faith is intended for all nations. This highlights the universal scope of the Gospel message. It signifies that the grace of God and the call to faith are not limited to any specific ethnic group or geographical location but are meant to be proclaimed and embraced by people from every nation, tribe, and tongue.
For His Name:The ultimate purpose of obedience to the faith among all nations is for the glory and honour of Jesus Christ. Paul recognizes that the name of Jesus is exalted when people respond in faith and obedience to the Gospel. The proclamation of the Gospel and the resulting obedience to the faith bring glory to the name of Christ as people are reconciled to God and transformed by His grace.
- Embrace the grace of God:Recognise that salvation and the call to faith are gifts of God’s grace, not something earned or deserved.
- Respond in obedience:Seek to live out the teachings of Jesus and His apostles in daily life, demonstrating obedience to the faith.
- Embrace the Great Commission:Share the Gospel with others, recognising that the call to faith is for all nations.
- Live for the glory of Jesus:Let your life reflect the transforming power of the Gospel, bringing glory to the name of Christ.
