Romans 1:4
And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
Romans 1:4 (KJV)
Context
The book of Romans, written by the apostle Paul, is one of the most important and comprehensive books in the New Testament. It addresses essential theological concepts, emphasising the gospel, salvation, and righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ. Romans 1:4 concludes Paul’s introductory description of the gospel concerning God’s Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Meaning
“Declared to be the Son of God”
Paul emphasises that Jesus Christ was “declared to be the Son of God.” The Greek word translated “declared” (horisthentos) carries the sense of being marked out, determined, or designated. This does not mean Jesus became the Son of God at the resurrection; rather, the resurrection was the powerful, public demonstration and confirmation of His eternal divine Sonship. He existed as the Son of God from everlasting and was manifested in the flesh, but the resurrection served as the divine decree, as it were, proclaiming Him to be the Son of God with power.
“With power”
The resurrection of Jesus is the pivotal event that displayed the power of God. It showcased Jesus’ victory over sin, death, and the grave. Through His resurrection, Jesus demonstrated His authority over all creation and His power to save and transform lives. This same divine power appeared in creation and in Christ’s miracles, and it is the power that raises believers to new life.
“According to the spirit of holiness”
This phrase highlights the divine nature and character of Jesus Christ. It emphasises His absolute purity and holiness. Unlike any other human being, Jesus lived a sinless life, fully obedient to God’s will, and was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. The “spirit of holiness” refers to the Holy Spirit, who was instrumental in the resurrection, raising Christ from the dead. This same Spirit is the agent of sanctification in believers, and the resurrection is the foundation for the believer’s future resurrection.
Significance of the resurrection
The resurrection is of utmost importance in Christianity. It confirms Jesus’ identity as the Son of God, validates His teachings, and provides the basis for faith in Him as the Saviour. The resurrection assures believers of eternal life, demonstrating God’s victory over sin and the promise of resurrection for all who believe in Him. Unlike Lazarus, whom Jesus raised, Christ raised Himself by His own power, and His resurrection was for our justification.
Application
Romans 1:4 encourages us to reflect on the power and significance of Jesus’ resurrection. It calls us to embrace Him as the Son of God and recognise His authority over our lives. The resurrection provides hope, assurance, and a foundation for our faith in Jesus Christ. It should inspire us to live in holiness, surrendering our lives to the transformative work of the Holy Spirit.
In summary, Romans 1:4 celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, affirming His identity as the Son of God and emphasising the power and holiness displayed through His resurrection. It serves as a reminder of the central role that the resurrection plays in the Christian faith and invites us to embrace Jesus as our Lord and Saviour.
