Romans 1:22

Posted on 18 May at 14:32

“Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools”

Context:To better understand this verse, it’s essential to consider the broader context of the book of Romans. The apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Romans, addressing both Jews and Gentiles, to explain the gospel of Jesus Christ and its implications for salvation and righteous living.

The pursuit of wisdom:In Romans 1, Paul discusses the state of humanity apart from God’s revelation. He highlights how people suppress the truth about God, preferring to worship idols and engage in sinful practices. Verse 22 focuses on the mindset of those who claim to be wise.

Professing themselves to be wise:Paul is pointing out the arrogance of people who claim to possess wisdom apart from God. They rely on their own understanding, intellect, or worldly knowledge, refusing to acknowledge the Creator and His divine revelation. This attitude is rooted in pride and self-sufficiency.

Becoming fools:Ironically, Paul describes those who claim wisdom apart from God as fools. By rejecting the true wisdom found in God and His Word, they become deceived and foolish. Their pursuit of knowledge and understanding outside of God’s truth leads them astray and blinds them to the ultimate reality.

Spiritual and moral consequences:The rejection of God’s wisdom has significant spiritual and moral consequences. Throughout the book of Romans, Paul explains that the rejection of God’s truth leads to a downward spiral of sinful behaviour and a distorted view of reality.

Application:Romans 1:22 serves as a warning against intellectual pride and self-reliance. It reminds us of the importance of acknowledging God as the source of true wisdom. As Christians, we are called to humbly seek wisdom from God through His Word, recognising that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). We should guard against the temptation to rely solely on human wisdom and instead seek to align our thoughts and actions with God’s revealed truth.

  • In conclusion:Romans 1:22 highlights the foolishness of those who profess their own wisdom while rejecting God’s truth. It serves as a reminder for us to seek true wisdom from God, humbly recognising His authority and relying on His Word for guidance in our lives.
