Romans 1:22

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

Romans 1:22 (KJV)

Paul wrote Romans to explain the gospel of Jesus Christ and its implications for salvation and righteous living, addressing both Jews and Gentiles. In Romans 1, he describes the state of humanity apart from God’s revelation, showing how people suppress the truth about God and prefer idols and sinful practices. Verse 22 focuses on the mindset of those who claim to be wise.

Paul points to the arrogance of people who claim wisdom apart from God. They rely on their own understanding, intellect, or worldly knowledge, refusing to acknowledge the Creator and His divine revelation. This attitude is rooted in pride and self-sufficiency. Ironically, those who claim wisdom become fools: by rejecting the true wisdom found in God and His Word, they are deceived and led astray, blinded to ultimate reality.

The Greek background reinforces this irony. Ancient philosophers called themselves “sophoi” (wise men) and later “philosophers” (lovers of wisdom), yet their boastful claims led to foolishness. True wisdom is not found in human intellect or education but in acknowledging God and His revelation. This verse sets the stage for the following verses, where Paul describes how humanity exchanged the glory of God for idols and descended into moral corruption.

The remedy to this folly is to trust in Jesus Christ, who is the power and wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24). Rather than claiming wisdom, believers are called to acknowledge their need for God’s grace and to put their faith in Christ for righteousness.

Romans 1:22 warns against intellectual pride and self-reliance. It reminds us to acknowledge God as the source of true wisdom. As Christians, we are called to humbly seek wisdom from God through His Word, recognising that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). We should guard against relying solely on human wisdom and instead align our thoughts and actions with God’s revealed truth.

  • Professing wisdom apart from God leads to foolishness; true wisdom begins with humility before Him.
